Safety Tips to Prevent Car Accidents

A car driver will do everything possible to avoid getting into an accident. However, in certain situations, avoiding car accidents can be impossible, and it happens to most people at one time or another. There are many situations when car accidents could have been prevented, if people just did the things they were supposed to do when they were behind the wheel. It is important that drivers follow all the rules of the road, and be careful to avoid any accidents. The following are some important safety tips to prevent car accidents:
Keeping eyes fixed on the road – Car drivers must keep their eyes fixed on the road and check their rear and side view mirrors at all times. They should not get distracted with the things going on inside the car. Avoid multi-tasking such as doing make-up, reading newspapers, changing CD’s, etc. Not concentrating solely on driving can result in an accident, because the driver will not be prepared for anything ahead of them.
Do not use cell phones – Using cell phones while driving is extremely dangerous and distracting. Drivers should make sure to put their phones away and make sure to turn it off so there is no urge to answer it if it rings. If there is a need to make a call, it is advisable to park the car before doing so.
Do not drink and drive – Drinking impairs a driver’s judgement. The driver loses the ability to focus and function properly, which can result in a serious car accident. It is always a good idea to have a designated driver or find an alternative form of transportation if you plan on drinking alcohol.
Do not exceed the speed limit – Driving over the designated speed limit is not only illegal, but also dangerous. Speeding not only reduces the reaction time, but also increases the risk of accidents. Therefore, always drive within the speed limit.
Avoid driving if unwell or stressed – Driving when stressed, fatigued or unwell can be disorienting, and may result in an error of judgement. These factors can also cause the driver to slow down his reaction time. It is unwise to drive in such a state.
Avoid construction areas – If there is construction work going on, it is advisable to avoid that route. Confusing detours in the construction area can cause car accidents. There may also be debris from the construction work that could cause tire blowouts. To avoid the risk of an accident, it is advisable to find an alternate route until the construction work is completed.
Ignore reckless and aggressive drivers – Reckless and aggressive drivers like to speed and cut other drivers off. The best way to avoid such drivers is to try and get as far out of their way as possible. If they are crawling up behind, slow down to let them pass. Get away from them as quickly as possible to ensure safety.
Follow traffic rules – Traffic rules are there for a reason. Drivers must follow all the rules of the road to avoid accidents, and getting traffic tickets. For example, when approaching a stop sign or a red light, it is good to slow down, so that the car can come to a complete stop before reaching the traffic light or stop sign.
