IVC Filters

When clients take the advice of their doctor, they want to rely on the information they are given. Doctors, in turn, rely often on the information they are provided by medical device manufacturers. One such product that has been in the news lately is the Inferior Vena Cava Filter or IVC. This product was promoted by manufacturers for use in patients who could not tolerate or use anti-coagulants. As such, the device was marketed to those patients for capture of blood clots that could pose of risk of travel to the lungs. This device, as with others, came under the review of the Food & Drug Administration or FDA. Here, in 2010, the FDA reviewed this medical device and raised concerns over the safety of the device. They cautioned that the device could fracture, migrate or travel within the body or cause or contribute to organ perforation. Information was provided as to recommendations for removal but many patients have been injured through the use of this device.
